Tresys Technology Releases Prototype of the Security Enhanced Linux Policy Server

Columbia, Maryland -- April 28, 2005 - Tresys Technology, LLC announces the release of a prototype policy management server for Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux). The policy server is part of an overall technology strategy to improve the policy management infrastructure for SELinux. This strategy includes also includes loadable policy module technology also being developed by Tresys which will be released for wide spread use this summer. The policy server is the next step in this strategy, and will add even greater flexibility to the management of SELinux systems. In addition, the policy server will provide enhanced security features for protecting the SELinux policy, which is a large database of rules that define the security posture of SELinux systems, as well as the ability to extend the SELinux type enforcement security mechanism outside the Linux kernel to key services such as database servers, X windows, and network daemons.

The policy server prototype released by Tresys provides a preview of the policy server technology under development, allowing the open source community to provide early comments on its design. SELinux is an emerging technology that improves the security of Linux, and is the key security enhancement in many Linux distributions including Red Hat’s Enterprise Linux and Fedora Core. SELinux brings modern, flexible mandatory access control (MAC) in the form of type enforcement to the Linux operating system. In addition to the SELinux policy server project, Tresys is leading several other technology innovation projects for SELinux including the development of the load module technology, the SELinux reference policy project, and the Tresys SeTools policy analysis tool suite.
